Rape and Date Rape

Rape, nowadays is very rampant globally. It is always an issue that we can read on the newspapers and watch on television. Rape, in law, is the crime committed by an individual who forces another person to have sexual relations against that person’s will. Traditionally, the law defined rape as a crime committed by a male against a female. Rape laws enacted by since 1960’s generally do not distinguish between attackers and victims on the basis of sex. Most rapes are male-against-female assaults, but sexual attack by man or group of men upon a male does occur.

While rape is one of the most frequently occurring crimes of violence, only a small percentage of rapes are reported because pf the sexual nature of the offense. Relatively few accused rapists are convicted and imprisoned because of the difficulty in proving lack of consent. Moreover, there are various factors and reasons why an individual committed such crime. In every action, there are always reasons behind. As an individual, we should not directly point our fingers to the offender because we might be also partly responsible for his actions.

Men are provoked to do such crime because women are over the top when it comes to dressing. They wear provocative clothing that awakens men’s desire to have sex Pornography on television, movies and internet also stimulates the rapist to commit the crime. In addition, an individual who is under the influence of drugs and alcohol might also commit the crime. Date Rape is a sexual assault committed by two persons who knows each other. They may be related by acquaintance or may be friends and of course may be dating. There are indeed those unlucky ones who experience this sexual violence.

Even if the people had sexual intercourse once or twice before, the man or woman still has no right to insist having sex with the opposite sex if the aforementioned dislikes having it. Date rape they say is not the means to show your obsession, attraction and love towards the other person. It is just the evil and lustful desires one has inside of him or her that are being suppressed and the time has come that he or she can not control it anymore and then succumb to that desire by committing a sexual violence towards his or her date.

Using drugs and alcohol are one of the predisposing factors why date rapes happen. Certain drugs may be mixed with the drinks and the let the victim drink it and then once the victim is sedated and weakened then that will be the time that the aggressor will grab the opportunity. When alcohol is being involved in the date, greater chances that date rapes occur. A sexual attack brings to mind young men who lurk in the shadows and suddenly spring on their unsuspecting victims. But this pattern is the exception rather than the rule: expert’s report that only in five rapes involves strangers.

For this reason, people have begun to speak more realistically about acquaintance rape or date rape. A rape is typically committed by a man who is known to, and even trusted by, his victim. But common sense dictates that being a “friend” (or even a husband) does not prevent a man from committing rape. Surely, many people think, a woman claiming to have been raped must have done something to encourage the man, to lead him on, to make him think that she really wanted to have sex.

Such thinking often paralyzes victims, so that women themselves experience self-doubt about their actions after having been raped. But by having dinner with a man—or even inviting him into your hotel room—you had hardly given consent to have sex with him anymore than these actions constitute an invitation to have him beat you with a club. In the absence of consent, rape is not sex but violence. The ancient Babylonians stoned married women to fell victim to rape, claiming that the women had committed adultery.

To a startling extent, ideas about rape have not changed over thousands of years, which helps to explain why, even today, most rapes go unreported to police and, even when authorities are notified, prosecutions and convictions are rare. At present, perhaps one in twenty rapes assaults in an offender being sent to jail. A crucial step in the right direction is for everyone to understand two simple truths: forcing sex without a woman’s consent is rape, and when a woman says “no”, she means just that.
